Tabula
1980
A monumental field of folded and crumpled canvas unfolds to reveal an intricate all-over pattern of luminous white voids set against vibrant expanses of saturated color. Hantaï's signature *pliage* technique — in which the canvas is bunched, tied, and painted before being spread open — surrenders compositional control to chance, producing organic, irregular shapes that pulse with rhythm and light. The result is a meditation on absence and presence, where the unpainted white traces of the folds become as expressive as the color itself.
