Phil, Fingerprint
2009
A monumental portrait of composer Philip Glass created using Chuck Close's signature fingerprint technique. This screenprint from an edition of 80 captures the intimate physicality of Close's working method through numerous individual touches of oil pigment that create the appearance of supple flesh. Hand-signed, dated and numbered in pencil by the artist, with certificate of authenticity issued by the gallery. The work demonstrates Close's mastery in translating his labor-intensive fingerprint process into the screenprint medium.

Sigmar Polke
German · b. 1941

Polke similarly transformed photographic imagery into grid based dot and mark systems that dissolve portraiture into repeating tactile units, closely paralleling how Close builds facial likeness from accumulated fingerprint impressions across a large format surface.

Gerhard Richter
German · b. 1932

Richter's large scale photorealist portrait prints and editions share Close's preoccupation with translating photographic source material into painterly or printed mark systems, producing monumental black and white figurative works that interrogate the boundary between photography and fine art printmaking.

Robert Longo
American · b. 1953

Longo creates monumental large format figurative works using dense accumulations of hand applied marks to construct hyperrealistic black and white portrait imagery, sharing Close's commitment to labor intensive mark making on a grand scale to achieve photographic fidelity.
