Tyler Mitchell is an American photographer and filmmaker who rose to prominence as the first Black photographer to shoot a cover for American Vogue in the magazine's 126-year history, photographing Beyoncé for the September 2018 issue. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Mitchell studied film and photography at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 2017. His work focuses on creating joyful, utopian images of Black life and challenging traditional representations of Black subjects in visual culture. Mitchell's artistic practice centers on themes of Black joy, leisure, and the reimagining of pastoral and idyllic spaces through a Black lens. His photographs often feature young Black subjects in serene, dreamlike settings characterized by soft lighting, vibrant colors, and natural environments. Rather than focusing on struggle or trauma, Mitchell deliberately constructs scenes that celebrate beauty, peace, and possibility. His work has been featured in major publications including Vogue, The New York Times, and i-D magazine, and he has collaborated with brands like Calvin Klein and Givenchy. Mitchell's fine art work has been exhibited at prestigious institutions including the International Center of Photography in New York, Foam Museum in Amsterdam, and the Kunsthal Rotterdam. In 2020, he had a solo exhibition titled "I Can Make You Feel Good" at the International Center of Photography. His photographs are part of permanent collections at institutions including the Brooklyn Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. Mitchell's significance lies in his role in expanding the visual vocabulary around Black representation and his influence on a younger generation of image-makers seeking to create affirming narratives.
