Maqbool Fida Husain, often called the 'Picasso of India,' was one of the most celebrated and controversial modern Indian painters of the 20th century. He was a founding member of the Progressive Artists' Group in Bombay in 1947 and became internationally renowned for his bold, vibrant figurative works drawing on Indian mythology, history, and everyday life. His prolific output and distinctive style made him a dominant force in the Indian art market, with works regularly achieving record prices at major auction houses including Christie's and Sotheby's.
