Eugène Leroy (1910–2000) was a French painter known for his densely layered, heavily impastoed canvases that blur the boundary between figuration and abstraction. Working largely in isolation from mainstream art movements, he built up surfaces of extraordinary thickness over decades, often reworking the same compositions repeatedly to achieve a luminous, almost sculptural materiality. Though recognized relatively late in his career, he is now regarded as one of the most singular and profound painters of the twentieth century.
