Anthony Goicolea is a contemporary American artist known for his digitally manipulated photographs, videos, sculptures, and installations that explore themes of identity, adolescence, memory, and social dynamics. Born in Atlanta, Georgia to Cuban parents, Goicolea initially studied engineering before pursuing art, earning his BFA from the University of Georgia and his MFA from Pratt Institute in 1999. His early work gained significant attention for his use of self-portraiture, where he would digitally clone himself to create surreal scenes populated entirely by multiple versions of himself, often depicting groups of adolescent boys in ambiguous, psychologically charged scenarios. Goicolea's photographic work often depicts dystopian or uncanny environments that blur the boundaries between innocent play and disturbing violence, childhood fantasy and adult anxiety. His elaborately staged scenes frequently reference art historical imagery, fairy tales, and pop culture while examining themes of isolation, bullying, homoeroticism, and the darker aspects of male adolescence. Beyond photography, he has created intricate sculptural installations and architectural models that construct fantastical, theatrical worlds. His work has been exhibited internationally at major institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Throughout his career, Goicolea has received numerous awards and residencies, including a Fulbright Fellowship. His work is held in prestigious collections such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. His artistic practice continues to evolve, incorporating new media and technologies while maintaining his interest in constructed realities, liminal spaces, and the psychological complexities of identity formation.
