Louis Marcoussis (born Ludwig Casimir Ladislas Markus) was a Polish-French painter and printmaker closely associated with Cubism, who studied in Paris and became deeply embedded in the avant-garde circles surrounding Picasso, Braque, and Juan Gris. His work is characterized by lyrical, refined Cubist compositions often featuring musical instruments, still lifes, and poetic imagery rendered with a distinctive delicacy and sense of color. Marcoussis is regarded as one of the most sophisticated and technically accomplished practitioners of Analytical and Synthetic Cubism, and his engravings and etchings in particular are highly prized for their precision and inventiveness.
