The Chicago Panels (Yellow)
1989
Part of Ellsworth Kelly's celebrated series 'The Chicago Panels' (1989–1999), this yellow relief panel is one of six monumental works conceived for the Art Institute of Chicago's Rice Building. The irregular, curved contours of the shaped canvas give the saturated yellow an architectural, object-like presence that blurs the boundary between painting and sculpture. Kelly's intention — to bring painting into direct contact with architecture — is fully realized here, as the panel functions less as a picture than as a calibrated chromatic presence in space. The series spans dimensions from 189.5 × 212.3 cm to 269.8 × 208 cm and is held in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
