Rothenberg created paintings featuring abstracted horses and human figures that bridged minimalism and Neo-Expressionism. Her gestural, emotionally charged canvases were groundbreaking in the 1970s and 1980s, with works held by MoMA, the Whitney, and Tate Modern. She received numerous honors including the National Medal of Arts, cementing her importance in American painting.

"That’s the fun of painting. You don’t have to have any real base or any real governing laws like you do in sculpture. That’s a place you can truly be anti-gravity." - Susan Rothenberg, 1988
