Narcisse Virgile Diaz de la Peña (1807–1876) was a French Romantic and Barbizon School painter celebrated for his richly colored forest scenes, particularly his luminous depictions of the Forest of Fontainebleau, as well as his allegorical figures and floral compositions. Born in Bordeaux to Spanish parents, he was largely self-taught and became one of the most commercially successful painters of his era, with his works frequently appearing at the Paris Salon. His painterly technique, characterized by jewel-like color and expressive brushwork, bridged the Romantic tradition and the emerging naturalism that would influence the Impressionists.
