Maurice Brazil Prendergast (1858–1924) was an American Post-Impressionist painter renowned for his vibrant, mosaic-like depictions of leisure scenes, parks, beaches, and urban life. Working primarily in watercolor and oil, he developed a distinctive style characterized by bold color, flattened forms, and a tapestry-like patterning influenced by his studies in Paris and exposure to Cézanne and the Nabis. He was a member of The Eight, the group of American artists who challenged academic conventions, and is considered a pioneering figure in the transition toward modernism in American art.
