Lewis Wickes Hine (1874–1940) was an American sociologist and documentary photographer whose images exposed the harsh realities of child labor in the United States in the early 20th century, helping to spur legislative reform. His work for the National Child Labor Committee from 1908 onward produced some of the most iconic social documentary photographs in American history. Later in his career, he documented the construction of the Empire State Building, producing celebrated images of workers perched at dizzying heights.
