Leonard Freed (1929, 2006) was an American photojournalist and documentary photographer best known for his unflinching exploration of racial inequality, civil rights, and social justice in America and abroad. His seminal series on the Civil Rights Movement, published in the book 'Black in White America' (1968), brought him international recognition and remains a landmark work in documentary photography. Freed was a longtime member of Magnum Photos and documented subjects ranging from post-war Germany to American law enforcement throughout his prolific career.
