Lalan, born Shäri (Chen Che-hsiu) in 1921 in China, was a pioneering abstract artist who worked primarily in Paris, where she became an influential figure in the École de Paris movement. A close associate and longtime companion of French poet Henri Michaux, she developed a deeply personal visual language rooted in lyrical abstraction, combining Eastern calligraphic sensibilities with Western gestural painting. Her works, often featuring delicate mark-making and meditative compositions, gained international recognition and were exhibited widely in Europe and beyond.
