Giacomo Manzù (1908–1991) was a leading Italian sculptor of the 20th century, celebrated for his deeply humanistic and spiritually resonant works in bronze. Largely self-taught, he rose to international prominence through his monumental liturgical commissions, most notably the bronze doors for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and Salzburg Cathedral, which blended sacred themes with tender, naturalistic figuration. His work, including the iconic 'Cardinal' series and intimate figurative studies of dancers and lovers, is distinguished by a lyrical realism that bridges classical tradition and modern sensibility.
