Agustín Cárdenas (1927, 2001) was a Cuban-born sculptor celebrated for his sensuous, abstract organic forms carved primarily in wood, marble, and bronze. Deeply influenced by Surrealism after relocating to Paris in 1955, where he became associated with André Breton's circle, his work fuses Afro-Cuban spiritual traditions with European avant-garde aesthetics. He is considered one of the most important Latin American sculptors of the twentieth century, recognized for his ability to evoke the human figure and natural forms through fluid, biomorphic abstraction.
