Thomas Downing was a painter who created dot paintings and Color Field works that explored optical effects through systematic arrangements of color. He was a founding member of the Washington Color School alongside Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland. His work is represented in the Hirshhorn, the Corcoran, and major American collections.
