The Circular Ruins
2017
A monumental 200 × 200 cm oil on canvas by Chinese artist Yuan Yuan (b. 1973), depicting an ornate interior architectural space suffused with teal and gold drapery, a grand chandelier, classical columns, and intricate mosaic flooring. The work exemplifies Yuan Yuan's signature hyperrealist approach to decaying or opulent interiors, blurring the boundary between memory, fantasy, and ruin. Signed in Pinyin, titled in Chinese and Pinyin, and dated 2017 on the reverse. Sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong Contemporary Day Auction on March 30, 2026 for 320,000 HKD against an estimate of 250,000–450,000 HKD.
