Mixed Messenger
Matthew Monahan's *Mixed Messenger* is a richly layered sculptural work that brings together humble and industrial materials—foam, wax, pigment, wood, charcoal, paper, and drywall—to construct a fragmented, haunting figure that evokes both ancient reliquary and contemporary ruin. The work reflects Monahan's signature approach of treating the human form as a site of accumulation and decay, where surfaces appear simultaneously built up and eroded. The combination of translucent wax and raw, structural materials creates a tension between fragility and permanence, as if the figure is caught in a perpetual state of becoming or dissolving.
