Having remained in the same collection for over forty years, Untitled (1985) was acquired directly from the artist in December 1985 by Marc Sanchez, curator of the first retrospective dedicated to Keith Haring at the CAPC Musée d’Art Contemporain in Bordeaux, together with Jean-Louis Froment, then director of the museum. It was on the occasion of this major exhibition that he personally purchased the work from the artist. Produced in the same year, Untitled is a drawing created using the intense black of Sumi ink in contrast with the white of the paper— a unique visual signature of Keith Haring. The composition features a dense network of characteristic figures, brought to life by a fluid and assertive line. The small crosses and the lines that punctuate the surface are part of the artist’s distinctive visual vocabulary: they convey the vibration, energy and internal tension of the scene, while also structuring the space with precision. Conceived using the power of black and white, this drawing is also the original of a screen print highlighted by the artist in the same year, produced in an edition of 150 signed and numbered copies, listed in the catalogue raisonné of the artist’s prints (Klaus Littmann, Keith Haring: Editions on Paper 1982–1990, p. 50). The work Untitled was created during a particularly active period in the artist’s career, which was characterized by his growing international recognition. In the five years leading up to his death in 1990, Haring exhibited extensively across Europe and took part in major art events, while exploring various media and public contexts, thereby increasing the visibility of his visual language beyond New York art circles. He also collaborated on institutional projects and created public works, marking an important stage in his rise to prominence. Thus, Untitled perfectly illustrates the maturity of Keith Haring’s visual vocabulary: clear and dynamic. Energy and movement are conveyed through precise, rhythmic lines.
