Yousuf Karsh was an Armenian-Canadian portrait photographer celebrated as one of the most accomplished and influential photographers of the 20th century, renowned for his psychologically penetrating images of world leaders, artists, and cultural figures. His iconic 1941 portrait of Winston Churchill, in which he famously snatched the Prime Minister's cigar moments before shooting, became one of the most reproduced photographs in history and established his international reputation. Over a career spanning six decades, Karsh photographed virtually every significant figure of the 20th century, including Ernest Hemingway, Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso, and Queen Elizabeth II, with his work appearing in major publications such as Life magazine and held in permanent collections at institutions including the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the National Archives of Canada.
