Yoshishige Saito (1904, 2001) was a pioneering Japanese avant-garde artist widely regarded as one of the most important figures in postwar Japanese art. Working primarily with wood, he developed a distinctive sculptural and painterly practice that merged abstraction with the inherent qualities of his materials, creating works of stark, powerful simplicity. His decades-long career influenced generations of Japanese artists, and he remained creatively active well into his nineties.
