William James Glackens (1870, 1938) was an American painter and illustrator who became a leading figure of the Ashcan School, known for his vibrant depictions of everyday American life and leisure. Influenced by Impressionism, particularly the work of Renoir, his style evolved from dark realist tones to bright, colorful canvases capturing parks, beaches, and café scenes. He was a founding member of The Eight and played a pivotal role in organizing the landmark 1913 Armory Show.
