Wallace Berman (1926, 1976) was a pioneering American artist and a central figure of the Beat Generation and California assemblage movement, known for blending spirituality, mysticism, and countercultural politics in his work. He is best known for his Verifax collages, which featured a grid of hands holding transistor radios overlaid with diverse imagery, exploring themes of communication, the unconscious, and the Kabbalistic. His underground publication Semina, distributed by mail to a select community of artists and poets, cemented his role as a key connector and cultural force in postwar American avant-garde art.
