Miguel Covarrubias (1904–1957) was a Mexican artist, caricaturist, illustrator, and anthropologist who gained international fame for his witty and incisive caricatures published in Vanity Fair and The New Yorker during the 1920s and 1930s. His work bridged modernism and folk art traditions, reflecting deep engagement with Mexican culture, African American culture of the Harlem Renaissance, and the indigenous peoples of Bali and Tehuantepec. Beyond illustration, he was a celebrated muralist, book illustrator, and cultural anthropologist whose contributions to both art and scholarship remain highly regarded.
