Michael Ray Charles is an American painter and visual artist known for his provocative works that appropriate and subvert imagery from historical American advertising, minstrelsy, and pop culture to critique racial stereotypes and the legacy of racism in the United States. His paintings often employ the visual language of vintage commercial art, using caricatured Black figures reminiscent of Jim Crow-era iconography to expose the deep-seated prejudices embedded in American consumer culture. Charles has exhibited internationally and taught at the University of Texas at Austin, where his work continues to challenge viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about race and representation.
