Lee Bae works primarily with charcoal, creating monochromatic paintings and sculptures that explore the material's origins in fire and transformation. His work connects to Dansaekhwa's emphasis on materiality while bringing a contemporary sensibility to traditional Korean materials. He has exhibited at the Venice Biennale and his work is in the collection of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea.
