Ilya Yefimovich Repin (1844–1930) was a Ukrainian-born Russian painter who became one of the most celebrated artists in 19th-century Russia. Known for his powerful realist compositions, his major works include Barge Haulers on the Volga, Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan, and Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks. He was also highly regarded for his intimate portraits of prominent Russian cultural figures, including Leo Tolstoy and Modest Mussorgsky.
