Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun (1755, 1842) was a celebrated French Neoclassical portraitist and one of the most successful female painters of her era, best known as the official court painter to Queen Marie Antoinette. Her luminous, elegant portraits of European aristocracy and royalty brought her international acclaim, and she was one of only a handful of women admitted to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. Following the French Revolution, she spent years in self-imposed exile across Europe, painting nobility from Russia to England before returning to France.
