Edward Steichen (1879–1973) was a pioneering American photographer and painter who played a central role in establishing photography as a fine art. A key figure in the Photo-Secession movement alongside Alfred Stieglitz, he later became chief photographer for Condé Nast and directed the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art, where he curated the landmark 'The Family of Man' exhibition in 1955. His work spanned Pictorialist soft-focus portraiture, fashion photography, and documentary imagery, making him one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century.
