E. Ambrose Webster (1869–1935) was an American modernist painter born in North Attleborough, Massachusetts, who became one of the pioneering figures in bringing Post-Impressionist and Fauvist color theories to the United States. He studied in Paris at the turn of the twentieth century, where he was deeply influenced by the bold chromatic experimentation of the French avant-garde, particularly the Fauves. Upon returning to America, Webster settled in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he established one of the earliest art schools on Cape Cod in 1900, helping to transform Provincetown into a vital center for American modernism decades before it became widely celebrated as such.
