Dmitri Baltermants

Dmitri Baltermants (1912, 1990) was a renowned Soviet photojournalist whose powerful images documented some of the most significant events of the 20th century, including World War II and life in the Soviet Union. His striking wartime photographs, particularly 'Grief' (1942), which depicted Soviet civilians mourning the dead after a Nazi massacre, are considered masterworks of documentary photography that transcend reportage to achieve profound artistic expression. Working primarily for the Soviet publication Ogoniok, Baltermants became one of the most celebrated photographers of his era, known for his dramatic compositions and unflinching portrayal of human suffering and resilience.
