Chris Killip (1946–2020) was a British documentary photographer renowned for his unflinching black-and-white portraits of working-class communities in the north of England, particularly during the era of deindustrialization in the 1970s and 1980s. His seminal book 'In Flagrante' (1988) is considered a landmark of social documentary photography, capturing the harsh realities of poverty and resilience with deep empathy and formal rigor. Killip taught at Harvard University for over two decades and is widely regarded as one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century.
