Charles Gaines

Charles Gaines is an American conceptual artist whose practice explores the intersection of systems, language, and representation through serialized works involving photography, drawing, and text. He is known for his rigorous rule-based methodologies that interrogate subjectivity and objectivity, often layering numerical grids over photographs or natural imagery to question how meaning is produced. Gaines is a highly influential figure in West Coast conceptual art and has been a longtime professor at CalArts, where he has shaped generations of artists.
