Alan Shields (1944–2005) was an American artist associated with the experimental wing of post-minimalist and process art, known for his innovative use of unconventional materials such as canvas strips, thread, beads, and sewn fabrics. He rejected the traditional stretched canvas format, creating colorful, often three-dimensional works that hung freely or could be walked around, blurring the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and craft. Shields was a significant figure in the New York art world from the late 1960s onward, represented by Paula Cooper Gallery and celebrated for his playful yet rigorous exploration of color and form.
