Salvatore Scarpitta (1919–2007) was an Italian-American artist known for his innovative mixed-media works that blended art with themes of speed, racing, and physicality. He gained recognition for his bandaged and wrapped canvas works in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as his life-sized racing cars and sleds that challenged traditional boundaries between art and object. Associated with both the postwar European avant-garde and the American art scene, Scarpitta exhibited extensively in Europe and the United States, maintaining a distinctive practice that celebrated movement, endurance, and vernacular American culture.
