In this work, Baldessari layers acrylic and oil paint over an inkjet print on canvas, combining photographic imagery with gestural painting in his characteristically conceptual manner. The title's reference to De Chirico suggests an engagement with metaphysical art and its dreamlike spatial ambiguities, which Baldessari recontextualizes through his mixed media approach. By merging mechanical reproduction with hand applied paint, the artist questions the relationship between representation and abstraction, and between found and created imagery.
