Tseng Kwong Chi (1950–1990) was a Hong Kong-born, New York-based photographer best known for his 'Expeditionary Series,' in which he photographed himself in a Mao suit at iconic American landmarks and tourist destinations, exploring themes of identity, East-West relations, and belonging. A central figure in the 1980s New York downtown art scene, he documented the emerging careers of artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, producing some of the most iconic images of that era. His work critically interrogated cultural displacement and the politics of representation with wit and conceptual rigor.
