Thomas Doughty (1793–1856) was one of America's earliest professional landscape painters and a pioneering figure of the Hudson River School. Born in Philadelphia, he was largely self-taught and gained recognition for his serene, atmospheric depictions of the American wilderness, rivers, and countryside. His work helped establish landscape painting as a respected genre in the United States and influenced subsequent generations of American artists.
