Sir Jacob Epstein (1880–1959) was a pioneering American-British sculptor whose bold, expressive works challenged conventional aesthetics and provoked significant public controversy. Influenced by primitive art, Cubism, and Vorticism, he created monumental public sculptures as well as intimate portrait bronzes of leading cultural figures of his era. He is widely regarded as one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century, helping to modernize British sculpture and leaving a lasting legacy through works such as 'Rock Drill' and his numerous church commissions.
