Robert Swain Gifford (1840–1905) was an American landscape painter and etcher celebrated for his atmospheric depictions of coastal New England, the Pacific Northwest, and North Africa. A student of Albert Van Beest, he became a respected member of the Hudson River School tradition while developing a more intimate, tonalist sensibility in his later work. Gifford was also a prominent etcher and helped revive interest in printmaking in America, serving as a founder of the New York Etching Club.
