Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606–1669) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, draughtsman, and printmaker widely regarded as one of the greatest visual artists in the history of Western art. Known for his mastery of light and shadow, emotional depth, and virtuosic handling of oil paint and etching, he created an extraordinary body of work encompassing portraits, self-portraits, biblical and mythological scenes, and landscapes. His innovative use of chiaroscuro and unflinching psychological realism profoundly influenced generations of artists and remain central to the Western artistic canon.
