Martin Schongauer was a highly influential German painter and engraver of the 15th century, renowned for his exquisite mastery of the burin and his deeply expressive religious compositions. His engravings, celebrated for their intricate detail and emotional intensity, profoundly influenced a generation of artists including the young Albrecht Dürer. Working primarily in Colmar, he elevated printmaking to a fine art and remains one of the most significant figures of Northern European late Gothic art.
