Marisol Escobar (1930, 2016), known simply as Marisol, was a Venezuelan-American sculptor celebrated for her bold, witty assemblages combining carved wooden blocks with found objects, plaster casts, and painted surfaces to create figurative works that satirized power, celebrity, and social convention. Emerging in the New York art scene of the 1960s alongside the Pop Art movement, she gained widespread recognition for her distinctive portrait sculptures of public figures and political leaders. Her work defied easy categorization, blending folk art traditions, Pre-Columbian influences, and sharp social commentary into a highly original visual language.
