Lari Pittman creates densely layered paintings that combine decorative patterns, sexual imagery, and cultural symbols to explore American identity and queer experience. His maximalist canvases from the 1980s and 1990s challenged minimalist aesthetics and addressed the AIDS crisis. His work is in the collections of MoMA, the Whitney, and LACMA.
