Kumi Sugaï (1919, 1996) was a Japanese-born painter who moved to Paris in 1952, where he became an influential figure in the European abstract art scene. His work is characterized by bold geometric forms, vibrant colors, and a synthesis of Western abstraction with Japanese aesthetic sensibilities, often incorporating symbolic signs and calligraphic elements. Sugaï gained international recognition and is considered one of the most significant Japanese artists to have worked within the European postwar avant-garde tradition.
