Hughie Lee-Smith (1915, 1999) was an African American painter known for his hauntingly evocative figurative works that depict solitary figures in desolate, dreamlike urban and coastal landscapes. His paintings blend social realism with surrealist undertones, conveying themes of alienation, longing, and the African American experience in mid-20th century America. He was one of the first African American artists to be elected a full member of the National Academy of Design and is regarded as a significant yet underrecognized figure in American art history.
