Ernest Mancoba (1904, 2002) was a pioneering South African modernist artist who spent much of his life in exile in Europe, primarily France and Denmark. His work blends African spiritual traditions with European modernism, producing lyrical, gestural paintings and sculptures that explore themes of humanity, freedom, and transcendence. Mancoba is widely regarded as one of the most significant African artists of the 20th century, a trailblazer whose contributions were long overlooked due to the political circumstances of apartheid South Africa.
