Chu Teh-Chun (1920–2014) was a Chinese-French painter celebrated for his lyrical abstract works that harmoniously blended Western abstract expressionism with the aesthetics and philosophy of Chinese ink painting and calligraphy. Born in Jiangsu Province, China, he studied at the Hangzhou Academy of Fine Arts before emigrating to France in 1955, where he developed a distinctive visual language characterized by luminous color fields, dynamic brushwork, and poetic evocations of nature. He became one of the most acclaimed Asian artists of the 20th century and was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1997, the first Chinese artist to receive this honor.
