Charles Hermans (1839, 1924) was a Belgian realist painter celebrated for his large-scale genre scenes depicting the social contrasts of 19th-century Brussels bourgeois life. His monumental work 'À l'Aube' (At Dawn, 1875) brought him international recognition by juxtaposing reveling aristocrats with exhausted working-class figures. He exhibited widely at major European salons and his works continue to appear at auction houses specializing in 19th-century European art.
